Instead of guessing and trying and failing repeatedly why not hire someone to come and service the lock and dial assembly AND show you how to dial correctly? I'm willing to bet your safe probably hasn't been serviced in the three generations of ownership you cited. If your father was able to open that safe using the numbers you have, obviously you're not dialing correctly or the lock is not working right. I've been handed owner-written combinations that looked as if they were written by Tolstoy when all that was needed was something like this: ![]() It's because they don't know how to write them correctly.
